The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are funding a pee-powered smartphone battery. The scientists that have demonstrated their pee powered battery just got a grant from the foundation to develop the tech further.

The tech uses a Microbial Fuel Cell. Inside it are micro-organisms that take urine and break it down and output electricity.

The system involves piping the urine through a tube into a series of fuel cell converters to create electricity. It also expels a broken down version of the urine which makes it safer to dispose of. Check out the full video of the scientists explaining how it works:
