Listening to Jazz Music When You Eat Might Help You Lose Weight

Having good food is great, but apparently, the music you listen to while you eat may influence your ability to enjoy it, according to a recent study from the journal Appetite.
Researchers gave study participants either chocolate or red peppers to eat and had them listen to four different types of music: jazz, hip hop, classical, and rock, during four different sessions. Then the researchers had participants rate how much they liked their food.
The milk chocolate represented "emotional food," food people tend to turn to for when they needed a pick-me-up. The peppers represented "non-emotional food," where the music didn't have a significant impact on the taste of the peppers.
But people who ate the chocolates reported liking them more when they were listening to jazz, and liked it least when they listened to hip hop.
Study authors suggest that it may all come down to mindfulness. Jazz tends to be soothing and peaceful, and can put you in a reflective mood, while hip hop tends to be more aggressive, so you're likely to feel on-edge when you listen to it.
The study didn't measure how much of each food people ate, but previous research had suggested that when you take time to really enjoy your food, you end up eating less of it overall.
So the next time you listen to music while you eat, make sure it's jazz, because you probably won't overeat, and you'll feel relaxed and at ease! Could this be why most fine dining restaurants put jazz music on, and serve smaller portions? Now that's food for thought.
