Intel launched its latest dual-core 64 bit mobile processor dubbed Merrifiled. It also spilled some beans on its follow-up - the quad-cored Moorefield. The only issue here? They need devices to jump into.

Merrifeld, aka Intel Atom processor Z3480, runs on Intel's 22nm Silvermont microarchitecture, and has speeds of up to 2.13GHz. The power efficiency rivals ARM based chips and it will start showing up in handsets in the second quarter of the year.

Moorefield meanwhile, ups the ante with an additional two cores to bring its speed up to 2.3GHz. It won't be showing up until the second half of the year and according to Intel's benchmarks, both chips beat out Apple's A7 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800.

They plan to put the chips in devices from Foxconn, Asus and Lenovo. [Laptop Mag]
