Adding Lemon To Green Tea Makes It Healthier
2014.02.27
There's no doubt that green tea is an amazing elixir, but recent studies claim that adding a little lemon can make it even healthier.
This all has to do with the main health compound found green tea called catechins, which has been linked to a reduced risk of cancer, heart attack, and other diseases. But the trouble with catechins is that isn't absorbed very well in the intestines; only less than 20 percent of remain after digestion.
In both studies, researchers found that adding lemon juice, other citrus juice, or vitamin C helped the body absorb as much as 13 times (80 percent) than normal. The studies tested the effects of absorption with both rats and a human digestive model. It's also worth mentioning that one of the studies also showed adding sugar with the lemon juice helped absorption, but sugar isn't required.
If you're not keen on squeezing lemon into your cup, you could also just have a glass of citrus juice with your green tea. Or try stocking up on ready-made products that have 100 percent of the daily recommended vitamin C.
