The researchers from the University of California have created a system that shows how the brain works in real time, and they allow users to navigate right inside their heads and see all the neuronal activity firing in three dimensions.

The researchers created a high resolution 3D brain model using Magnetic Resonance Imaging and built a statistical model to "reconstruct the locations and dynamics of multiple sources of activity inside the brain from signals measured at electrodes on the scalp."

Then they connected the model to the output from an 64-channel electroencephalographic cap and built an iPad application to let the user navigate the brain:
Each color represents source power and connectivity in a different frequency band (theta, alpha, beta, gamma) and the golden lines are white matter anatomical fiber tracts. Estimated information transfer between brain regions is visualized as pulses of light flowing along the fiber tracts connecting the regions.
