15 Ways to Act More Like an Adult
2014.07.08
You're in your 20s now, and you've been working for a while already. You've got your own money to buy the things you want, and you party like there was no tomorrow. At some point, you'll have to grow up...into a real adult. Here are 15 ways to act more like one before it is too late:
1. Have a beauty regime, even if you are a guy
Your skin will age as you get older. It will lose its springiness and glow. Which is why keeping it in good health is a big deal, and it should start at a young age. Don't have one yet? Start one today, then.
2. Get your finances in check.
Do you know where your money is going to? 30% to the pub? 40% to shopping? While it is good advice to not spend without a care in the world, knowing where your money goes is the first step to practicing that. So get your finances in check.
3. Dress like one.
Stop wearing baggy pants. Some wearing shirts that don't fit. Stop wearing t-shirts that say "brosb4hoes". Dress like an adult. The people around you will appreciate it. Or at least, not make fun of you.
4. Start planning for your retirement.
Don't splurge. Save instead. Cash is king. When you're older, you won't be so body-able to work so hard anymore. And when you retire, you'll want to at least sit on a decent amount of money to live off comfortably. Worrying about money when you're old is the worst thing you could do for yourself.
5. Make time for alone time.
We've got too much distractions these days. From the TV to the Internet, then there's our phones and tablets. We spend too much time on Facebook looking at friends' lives. Why not set aside some time alone in a day to reflect, or just disconnect to retain your sanity. It'll help.
6. Organize your time.
Time is precious. Your timetable now is just work, drinks, party, sleep. And then repeat. But as you get older, you'll have less time to do all of that. Organize it properly, so you'll never have the excuse of "I have no time".
7. Meet at least 3 friends a month.
When you're in your 30s, you'll find that you will have less friends to call out for a drink. But that's entirely understandable. People in their 30s or 40s have commitments, families to attend to, and other things to do. So it doesn't hurt to start socializing right now. Make more friends. Grow your real life social network. Meet with at least 3 a month, and hope you can continue to do so when you pass your 20s.
8. Don't owe the credit card companies.
Paying the minimum amount required for what you owe the credit card this month? Bad mistake. Don't do it. Just pay the whole thing. A small amount of interests may look easy to pay off in the beginning, but when that accumulates, you're going to have a hard time. Buy only what you can afford. Never go beyond the limit.
9. Start making a career.
Don't just work a job. Make it a career. Or find something that is promising. Be good at it. Be the best at it. Because you don't want to keep jumping on to different things. You'll want to climb up the career ladder instead.
10. Take care of your things.
Wash your car. Don't drop your phone. Remember where you put your watch. These things sound like chores and nagging from your parents, but they were doing it for a reason: to make you a responsible person. If you can't love the things you own, how will you be able to love yourself?
11. Take care of your health.
Parties are great. Raves are awesome. But too much of that, consecutively no less, will hurt your body. You might be young now, but if you don't take care, you'll fall into the trap of containing your health issues instead of avoiding them when you're older.
12. Learn how to cook.
This is the basic 101 for survival. Learn how to make a meal or two, on your own. It never hurts when you know how to self-preserve yourself on days you don't feel like ordering in or taking out.
13. Learn how to clean.
You're not going to live with mom and dad forever. At some point, you're going to have to learn how to get your clothes cleaned. It really isn't that hard at all.
14. Don't be afraid to try new things.
Don't be stuck to a routine. It is the recipe of a boring person! Mix things up a bit. Do things differently when what you've been doing before doesn't work. Doggedly doing something hoping for a different result is akin to insanity.
15. Travel.
Don't waste your time in pubs or clubs. Expand your horizons by visiting other places and spend money on experiences, not on material things.
