Arguably the most iconic shape for a car ever, there isn't anyone who probably doesn't recognize what the Volkswagen Beetle looks like. Of course, between the old and the new, the differences are stark and huge.

Informally known as the Volkswagen Bug, or officially the Volkswagen Type 1, it was a two-door, four passenger, rear engined economy car made from 1938 until 2003.

Designed by Ferdinand Porsche and his team, they took till 1938 to finalize the design. It was one of the first rear-engined cars.

The Beetle is the longest-running and most manufactured car of a single design platform, worldwide.

Despite its shape, you wouldn't believe that it was originally designed for sustained high speed on the Autobahn.

From there, variants of the Beetle came about.

Various upgrades were made over the years from 1953 to 1967, including a larger displacement engine, increasing horsepower and more.

It started to change more underneath with the Super Beetle, featuring more power. Pretty sure Herbie was a Super Beetle.

But it was the modern touch that gave it more sex appeal. Introduced in 1997, it drawed heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle.

But unlike the original, the New Beetle's engine is in the front.

Sharing the same platform with the current Volkswagen Jetta, it is built alongside the Jetta and the Golf variant.

Special editions were launched too. The Black Turbo edition for example only saw 600 examples of the model.
