Had we not say it was menstrual blood, you would have just marveled at these beautiful works of art without anything else. Now that you know, it's kind of impressive to even begin thinking about using menstrual blood as an art prop.

This is Jen Lewis' art project and it is called Beauty in Blood.

She used her own menstrual blood to create abstract designs.

She started to wonder about why society framed up menstruation as something disgusting.

She hopes that her art project will wipe the stigma associated with period blood away.

She began creating her designs back in 2012 with her husband Rob in a makeshift bathroom studio.

Over time, they moved their project into a small aquarium filled with a mixture of fresh and salt water.

It allowed her to create two different densities, making very interesting blood movement.

This is biological science meets art.
