It's common to see people walking around with surgical masks in Japan. I guess it's going to be a common thing too right here since the haze is not letting up just yet. But in Japan, one other reason you might find people in these masks is because a research from Hokkaido University says that wearing a pink one makes a woman appear significantly more attractive.

Researchers had 33 male and female participants rate the attractiveness of women photographed without masks, wearing white ones, and wearing pink ones.

The results: Women wearing pink masks were rated 104 percent more attractive when they were wearing pink masks.

Either way, don't wear one for vanity's sake. Wear one because the air quality is pretty damn bad for you.
