For a while now, Bill Gates has been holding the top spot for being the richest man on Earth. And he's also the man-to-beat when it comes to a group of billionaires, obviously. The dude that beat him? He sells clothes.

It's none-other than Spanish retail tycoon Amancio Ortega. He briefly topped Bill Gates as the richest man on Earth.

He's the owner of apparel company Zara, with 6,000 stores in over 89 countries.

Forbes say that Ortega's fortune is worth $79.8 billion as of Friday morning thanks to his stock in the holding company Industria de Diseno Textil hitting 33.99 Euros per share.

Ortega's story is rags to riches. He's the son of a railway worker, and cofounded Zara in 1975 with his wife Rosalia Mera. He was born into a humble family who did not have the comforts that money could provide.

The first Zara was opened in Spain and sold nightgowns, lingerie, and babywear. Today, it's known for affordable immitations of high-fashion designs.

Ortega rarely does interviews and is seldom photographed. He's also known to take feedback from shop assistants too. Very down to earth kinda guy!

How long will he remain at the top spot, we wonder?
