Back In The 1600s, Japanese Noble Women Hired People To Blame Their Farts On
2015.11.24
Noble women don't fart. If you are highborn you don't fart. Or rather, nothing smelly comes out. It's all rainbows and kittens! So because of this seemingly impossible human-feat, Japanese noble women had to employ servants to publicly take the blame for their farts.
In the Edo Period, from 1603 to 1868, it was a job one could actually be hired for.
The profession is called heoibikuni. They would accompany their mistress on excursions and assumed the duties of a lady-in-waiting.
One of the other job descriptions: accepting the fault of farting. Ones that smelled, perhaps.
Interesting job?
