Escalators aren't getting any safer, even after countless reports of them harming people who got on them. The fear of escalators has returned with the latest horrific event - an elderly man in Shenzen suffered injuries when the escalator gave way.

He was riding up the second floor when one of the steps fell through.

His legs fell in, and was pulled in and mangled by the escalator.

Rescue workers had to cut away some of the elevator to free the man. It took 40 minutes.
