Sometimes, even the cleanest of people find pests like cockroaches, termites, fleas, and other pests in their home. These bugs may bite, cause disease and illness, or even damage your home. And pests have stealthy ways, even for those of us who are meticulous and careful about our doors and windows, of getting past our defenses.
How do they do it?

They Hitch Rides on Animals

Unless you treat your pets, they can be carriers of fleas, ticks, and even mites. However, they are not the only critters that bring pests into your home. If you do not have the vents of your home covered with an insect-proof mesh lining, then squirrels, birds, and other animals may sneak in and start calling your attic or crawlspace home. They can also fall off of deer, squirrel, groundhogs, and other animals that may enter your yard and eventually migrate into the house. But lastly, they can also hitch a ride on you!

They Smell the Food

Pests like cockroaches are incredibly sensitive when it comes to sniffing food out. They can come from anywhere in your woods or neighborhood and will go anywhere they smell food. This odor can come from improperly stored food in your house, letting dishes sit before washing them, your kids’ rooms, and, of course, the trash can. Exercise a little mise-en-place and remember that just because you don't smell it doesn't mean it isn't already attracting unwanted guests.

They Are Drawn in By Recyclables and Trash

Most people realize that trash can draw not only pests but also critters like skunks and raccoons. However, your outdoor trash can is not the only thing they are drawn in by. Few people realize how important it is to rinse out all of your recyclables before tossing them in the bin. Failing to do so can cause the tiny amounts of leftover liquid to ferment and release powerful odors, bringing in just as many pests as the garbage can.

They Like Pet Food and Waste

Pets can carry in pests with them, but they can also be magnets for them for other reasons. If you have a pet that uses a litter box or one that uses the bathroom outside of the home, it can attract all types of pests to your yard. Once they are in your yard, it is only a matter of time before they try to work their way into the house. Open pet food bags and food dishes can also be tempting for pests, so be sure to keep pet food in a sealed container and only put food dishes down when your pet is eating.

They Sneak in Through the Cracks and Crevices

Even the most insignificant crack is an invitation for termites, cockroaches, and other bugs that may invade your home. Be sure that cracks in the home’s foundation and exterior walls are filled or repaired, all doors and windows are properly sealed, and screened windows and doors are properly maintained and repaired when necessary. You can also try to make sure your home is not suitable for pests, by keeping it free of moisture and excess clutter.
