Just about everyone sustains some type of cut, scrape, or abrasion now and then. Minor issues can be managed at home if you maintain a properly stocked first aid kit. Here are a few examples of what you should keep on hand for those minor issues.

Gauze in Several Sizes

Gauze is one of the most basic of all medical supplies needed for a home first aid kit. Consider a roll of gauze that you can cut to any length or shape needed. For cuts on knees or areas like the forearms, you may want to invest in a few gauze pads. They will help protect the area while the cut is healing and prevent dirt or other contaminants from creating an infection.

Antiseptic Wipes

Cleaning a wound before dressing it is a must. You want to make sure any foreign matter is out of the way and will not impede the healing process. Antiseptic wipes can be used to pat the affected area and ensure there is nothing there to cause additional discomfort.

Elastic Bandages

These bandages can be cut to any length you like and make it a lot easier to hold the gauze and other wound coverings in place with ease. The material does not require any type of hooks or tape to secure the bandage in place. Thanks to the adhesive properties, all you have to do is wrap the bandage around the area and press lightly. The bandage will stay in place until you are ready to remove it.

Adhesive Bandages

These are great for taking care of minor cuts that are likely to heal in a day or two. Keep several sizes on hand for cuts on fingers, toes, and even shaving nicks that a little larger. Thanks to the design, it’s easy to apply the bandage once you’ve cleaned the wound and ensure it remains free of any contaminants.

Surgical Gloves

You may think that surgical gloves are only for use in medical facilities but they come in handy around the house as well. If a family member sustains some type of cut, you can don a pair of the gloves, get out the cleaning solution and make sure the wound is disinfected with ease. The gloves prevent you from transferring any germs from your hands to the open wound as well as protect you from picking up any bacteria from the wound. Since they are disposable, you can throw them away once you finish dressing the wound.

These are only a few of the essentials that should be found in any home first aid kit. For more ideas of what to include, talk with a pharmacist or other medical professional. Keep in mind that if you have children in the house, there maybe a few additional supplies that should be kept on hand at all times. From the very first time you need to take care of a minor cut or abrasion, you’ll see the value of keeping your kit fully stocked at all times.
