Fashion Update: What Are All the Cool Kids Wearing?
2017.08.09
When it comes to what teenagers like and don’t like, it can change every second of the day. This makes it incredibly difficult for you to keep up with the latest trends, styles and must-haves.
However, thankfully, a recent survey conducted by Piper Jaffray (an investment bank) did shed some light onto what teenagers are wearing at present:
Teenage Clothing Trends
It’s perhaps no surprise that active wear continues to dominate teenage wardrobes, and that jeans, which have wavered in popularity recently, are returning as another favoured piece. However, compared to other apparel, e.g. Tiktok leggings, jeans still aren’t reaching the levels that they used to.
For males, there are two main trends that are coming through. The first is a preppy look that mixes chinos or khakis with boat shoes and tall socks, while the second is a casual style that merges jogging bottoms with athletic tops (and the must-have hair bun). The latter being the most popular trend.
For females, there are, again, these two distinct trends that are coming through – the smart casual and the ultra-casual look. As mentioned previously, leggings dominate the trend, with these and jeans being finished off with athletic tops or crop tops.
Teenage Footwear Trends
To fit in with the mainly casual look that teenagers are adopting, trainers are the favoured footwear choice. For guys, this is the standard trainer, while for girls, this is the lace-up boot or casual, pump-style trainer. These shoes are often purchased from popular high-street brands.
Finally, although this type of footwear wasn’t specifically included in the survey, Heeleys from Proline Skates and other companies also remain a popular item in teenage wardrobes, and it’s not hard to see why. They effortlessly blend in with the casual approach they’re taking to their clothing while also adding a fun, practical element to their getup. Walking isn’t always a favoured pastime for teens but for many it’s a necessary mode of transport when they’re visiting friends. Providing them with the choice to skate or walk, they can improve the speed and enjoyment of their journey immeasurably.
To find out the above information, Piper Jaffray spoke to approximately 6,500 teens with an average age of 16.5 years. The detailed study demonstrated that teenagers are very clear on what they like, and that casual, fun active wear is leading most of their wardrobe choices.
