Testing out the mattresses in store

Many people do not test their mattress before buying. But do you know testing a mattress will not only save you time and money but will also help you achieve quality sleep?

Due to this mattress, testing should be the first thing to do when you walk into a mattress shop. Let us not forget that we all have different sleeping positions and this makes it difficult to have a one size fit all mattress.

In other words, what works well for your friend may not work for you even if you have the same sleeping style. This is why you need a mattress that is exactly designed for your specific needs in relation to how you sleep.

When you walk into a mattress store and search around for a mattress that meets your criteria in terms of firmness or softens, quality, lifespan, comfort, price among others. You need to ignore all the descriptors tags such as this mattress is “ultra-plush, super-soft or extra-firm”.

Remember these are general terms without any regulations. Carelessly they can be used freely on each mattress without consistency

Now that you have identified some mattresses with most of these features narrow down your searches to 3 or 5 of the mattresses. Then, lay down on each of the mattresses for at least 3 minutes to get a feel of how soft or firm it is. This will give you an idea of how comfortable and supportive it is in relation to your sleeping style.

a) Side sleepers
If you are a side sleeper, you already know that your shoulders and hips stick out a bit into the mattress and it is disheartening to endure this discomfort. For this reason, what you need is a mattress that is a bit softer (not a very soft one) to accommodate the hips and shoulders.

This is beneficial because it provides for equal distribution of pressure while you’re sleeping on your side. Beyond this, it ensures the pressure points are well suspended and the spine is aligned just as if you’re standing. Due to this try to get a mattress that falls on the medium soft side.

b) Stomach sleepers
Consequently, if you’re a stomach sleeper you need something that will evenly distribute the body weight across the bed. Do not settle for a very soft mattress because your belly will the spine bending it against its natural curve.

So you can choose either a firm mattress if you’re on the light side or a medium-firm mattress if you’re on the heavier side. The bottom line your ideal choice must be on the firm side. This will offer enough support so that the spine is not misaligned.

c) Back sleeper
Finally, if you are a back sleeper firmness and support is essential. Sleeping on your back, you have fewer body parts sticking out of the mattress unlike when sleeping on your side.

Actually, if the mattress feels too soft, then the heaviest part of your body that is the hip area will certainly sink putting your spine out of alignment. This will cause back pain.

Again if you choose an overly firm mattress the same area will be pushed up which again puts the spine out of alignment. Of course, you do not want either of these, that is why you need to find one that is soft enough to offer pressure relief and adequate contouring to the spine while at the same time giving you enough support.

Consider your weight
Regardless of your sleeping style, your body weight will dictate what mattress is ideal for you. If you are on the heavy side and a stomach sleeper as well. You know that your belly should sink a little into the mattress to keep the spine aligned well.

A firm mattress does not provide for the sinking, this pushes the spine out of alignment. For this reason, go for a medium firm mattress. However, if you’re on the light side, you can go for a firm mattress.

Bottom line
If you want to buy a mattress that is perfect for your sleeping style in a short time, mattress testing can help. Nonetheless, do not forget to put your weight in the calculation. Finally, give a blind eye to the prices so that your purchase is dictated by comfort and support.
