Planning a Trip to Greece | Top things to Consider
2019.09.04
Organizing your first trip to Greece, there are a lot of things you need to know. If you do not know where to start, in this post you’ll find answers to the most common questions when you start planning the long-awaited trip so you can fully enjoy your first Greek experience. Let’s get to work!
When is the best time to visit Greece?
If you want to travel to the islands, the high season is July and August, but they are not the recommended months to visit because the prices increase, there are many tourists and the heat is really intense.Ideally, travel between the previous or subsequent months: from the end of May to mid-September in Greece is already a beach time and it is the best time to enjoy the islands without the invasion of tourists. The favorite months are June and September, in which you will also find better offers.
Between October and April most of the hotels and restaurants on the islands close until next season. During December and January it is uncommon to snow, but keep in mind that while Greece is a warmer country than the rest of the European countries, winter exists and it is cold.
If instead you want to know only cities like Athens, Thessaloniki, Delphi or Meteora, you can go at any time of the year.
How many days to spend in Greece?
All summer in the Greek islands might not be enough! Ideally, 10 days in total can be enough, taking into account transfers, to fully enjoy each place and not be running from one to another. If you have a week, it is also enough for a first visit but you will have to optimize the time perfectly.
How? Taking out the ferry or plane tickets in advance, booking the hotels, choosing the lodging areas in a strategic way to be able to do most of the tours on foot and make a list of the must-sees of each place or have someone prepare a tailor-made tours just for you.
What islands and cities to see
Greece has more than 600 islands, of which 200 are inhabited and about 100 are prepared for tourism. Incredible! The reality is that all the islands are different and all are so beautiful that they look like they came out of a fairy tale. To help you decide, here are some combinations that work:
- A first option may be the typical triangle: Athens, Mykonos and Santorini (giving priority to Mykonos nights as it has a better offer of beaches and nightlife)
- A second option, if you have 10 days, may be to add the island of Milos to the itinerary to add something different to the tour (the beaches are spectacular!)You can also combine with the island of Paros or Naxos that are nearby.
- A third option, more adventurous but certainly worthwhile, is to choose the Ionian area with a tour of 3 islands such as Zakynthos, Corfu and Lefkada, (Paxos and Antipaxos are also divine!)
- An island tour of the Dodecanese area or an entire week on the island of Crete, the largest and most complete of the Greek islands, can also be another great option.
How to move between islands
To visit different islands you can choose between normal or fast ferries.I recommend you pay the difference and choose the fast ferries (usually those of Sea Jet) so you will save a good amount of travel time.Another important fact: if you leave from Athens, always chose the exit from Pireus, the main port.If you have little time and prefer to do everything by plane, the local airline is AEGEAN AIRLINES and has many connections between the islands.
