People around the world often work what we refer to as “9 to 5” jobs. While not everyone works specifically from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, the term “9 to 5” is often used synonymously with any full-time, corporate job.
In the 21st century, however, the idea of working from home or outside of a corporate job with strict hours is becoming more popular than ever before. In fact, in the UK alone, just 6% of employees are now working 9 to 5.
While many people are growing tired of working traditional, 9 to 5 jobs, many continue working these jobs for the stability they provide. In addition, many employees fear that if they kiss their traditional job goodbye or start working remotely without their boss hovering over them, earning cash from home, and let alone concentrating on work, will be a struggle.
However, based on the following logic, you might discover that working remotely or even kickstarting your own business might be the better choice for you mentally, physically, and emotionally.
1. Several 9 to 5 jobs promote health problems.
While some career paths involve physical movement, common 9 to 5 desk jobs increase our risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, muscular-skeletal problems, and possibly early death. After all, office clerks, receptionists, executive assistants, data entry clerks, and the like tend to revolve around sitting at a desk all day.
For many young people entering the workforce today, a job that promotes the latter health problems is not ideal, especially in a world of rising medical costs. Today, people are more interested in careers that give them the time and flexibility to work out, focus on comfort while working, and emphasize mindfulness and grounding to keep them balanced throughout the day.
2. These days, most work can be done anytime, anywhere.
It makes little sense that many jobs have a specific set of hours if the work can be done at any hour of the day. Additionally, for many jobs, especially desk jobs, the idea of being limited to working at one location is outdated. The same, if not better, quality work can be produced if one works from home at an hour they feel the most rejuvenated.
3. Many 9 to 5 jobs don’t mingle well with our personal lives.
Plenty of us finds that our work and personal schedules clash. When there’s a family in the picture, we’re in the middle of furthering our education, or we have a specific lifestyle different from the average person, it’s hard to feel content working strict work hours each day.
With a more flexible job, or at least a job where one can work from home, one can focus less on their career development, working strict hours, and competing with others to rise to the top and can focus more on caring for children, volunteering in their community, and taking charge of their personal wants and needs while still bringing home money.
4. There are hundreds of ways to make money outside a traditional employer.
Modern-day employment is about finding a job you’re both good at and passionate about, even if it means you have to go the freelance, gig, or self-employment route. Not everyone is fit for regular employment, especially those who are creative, independent, and willing to take a risk if it means being happier. Non-traditional jobs include rideshare drivers, YouTubers, and artists.

Millions of individuals still work 9 to 5 jobs. Although, based on the latter arguments, it’s clear that not everyone is fit for a traditional job. Working remotely, freelancing, starting your own business, and other alternative ways to make an income are becoming more popular than ever before in the 21st century among both younger and more experienced folks in the workforce.
