It is only the size, quantity and location of any marks within a stone that determine the clarity or purity of each Diamond.

Color 
The color scale is graded on letters and starts at D(rare white) and finishes at I for white Diamonds. From J – M diamonds show more color through slight yellow down to a brown tinge. Below M are the natural fancy colors such as intense yellow and champagne.

Lab Grown Diamond Information 
HTHP Diamonds (High Temperature, High Pressure Diamonds)
First discovered in the 1950's the process involves using a seed of a Diamond which through high pressure and temperature the crystal is forced to grow in the same way that diamonds were formed under the ground. The process is now so advanced that stones up to 10ct and D Color Flawless can be grown.


CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition)
A sliver of an existing Type IIA diamond, otherwise known as a “seed”, is placed in an environment that contains a specific recipe of carbon compounds. The seed is then subjected to a process called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), wherein the crystals are formed from hot plasma in layers, like semiconductors. What results is a real Created Rough Diamond with all the natural properties of a mined diamond.

The four C's that are applied to all mined Diamonds can also be applied to any man or lab grown Diamonds as they are exactly the same chemically and physically.

The FCT (Federal Trade Commission) backed this fact up recently, revising their definition of a diamond and removing the word ‘natural’ from it. According to FCT “The Commission no longer defines a ‘diamond’ by using the term ‘natural’ because it is no longer accurate to define diamonds as ‘natural’ when it is now possible to create products that have essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds” (Source: Forbes)

The Federal Trade Commission recently revised its Jewellery Guides, in order to prevent deception of lab created diamonds and diamonds in the diamond market. They said they would believe scientific facts and not ‘minded-diamond industry lobby’. These guides are formed to prevent consumers from deceitful purchases and assist them to make informed diamond purchasing decisions. 

Amends made by The Federal Trade Commission (FCT)
It was during 1956 a decision was taken to coin the term diamond and it included the word ‘natural’. After that certain technological advances had made it possible to produce lab grown loose diamonds; CVD diamond & HPHT synthetic diamond making method. Due to which the FCT decided to eliminate some words from their definition related to mined and man made diamonds. Here are the changes:

1. The new definition is ‘A diamond is a mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system.’
2. The word ‘natural’ has been removed from this definition.
3. There is no mention of the word ‘synthetic’ for man made diamonds; as they believe man made diamonds to be real diamonds.
4. The FCT has clearly stated that diamond simulants are prohibited from being referred to like diamonds. 
5. The guide also clarifies that the use of words like ‘laboratory-grown’, ‘Lab-created’, and ‘hybrid’, is unfair and deceitful.
6. The man-made diamond industry can call their products ‘cultured’, ‘gems’, ‘gemstones’.
Overall the FCT stated that a diamond is a diamond, whether it is grown in a lab or comes out of the ground. 

Benefits for the Consumers 
These amends in the jewellery guides though raised concerns for the mined diamond industry but was a great win for consumers. Now sellers and retailers could officially state that their man made loose diamonds, fancy diamonds, white diamonds and even colored diamonds were all real diamonds.
