How to maintain your robot vacuum cleaner? 5 important tips
2022.06.30
What is the lifespan of a robot vacuum cleaner?
The average lifespan of robot vacuum cleaners is between 4 and 6 years.
Of course, the better you maintain it, the longer you could use it most efficiently.
During the time of operation, you may need to replace some components. These could be the brushes, filters and battery.
However, if you follow these tips, your vacuum cleaner will last longer.
5 tips to take care of your robot vacuum cleaner
Empty the bins regularly
Robot vacuum cleaners have very small containers for collecting trash. When their container gets full or something bigger gets stuck in it the vacuum stops cleaning effectively or stops cleaning at all, and just walks around your home.
For this reason, it is a good idea to dispose of the container after each cleaning. This operation doesn't take much time, but thanks to this you will be sure that your vacuum cleaner will do its job well the next time.
At least once a month it is a good idea to wash the container a little more thoroughly, as various dirt accumulates in it. This can be done during the deeper cleaning of the device.
Clean the wheels
As a result of moving on different surfaces, the wheels of your vacuum cleaner can get caked with different dirt. If you hear a squeaking sound or notice that the vacuum cleaner is harder to move, it's a good idea to clean its wheels of the accumulated junk.
To do this, try removing them (you can check the instructions or the internet on how they can be dismantled easily), clean the dirt and hair off them and the axle and put them back in place.
Maintain the main brush and the side brushes
The vacuum cleaner's brushes are its most vulnerable component. They need more frequent cleaning, as they are usually stuck with hairs, which can prevent their free movement.
If you use the vacuum for dusty areas, you can wash the brushes after the cleaning cycle is complete. Washing is done after removing them from the vacuum body. You can use water only or add detergent as well. Make sure the brushes are completely dry or dry them with a rag before putting them back in the vacuum cleaner.
Avoid extreme temperatures
It's a good idea to store your vacuum cleaner in areas without direct sunlight or away from heat sources. Consider the location of the charging station with this condition. Exposing the device to heat may cause damage to the battery or any of its other components.
Change the battery when needed
Some of the robot vacuum cleaners run on nickel-metal hydride batteries. If your vacuum cleaner uses such a battery, it's a good idea to let it do a full cycle often - to fully discharge and then recharge. Frequent cleaning will therefore not shorten the life of your appliance, quite the contrary.
If you notice that:
- the battery drains faster
- it charges more slowly
- it is charging abnormally fast but does not hold a charge
- does not start charging at all
you should consider a new vacuum cleaner battery. The good news is that you can choose an extended battery with a higher capacity that will last longer.
