Volkswagen is working on a new V6 direct injection gasoline engine. AutoWeek reports the new powerplant is being developed at VW’s Braunschweig engineering headquarters under the supervision of the carmaker’s new head of engine development, Fritz Eichler.

The V6 egine has a 3.0 liter displacement and has two banks of cylinders disposed at a tight 15 degree angle to ensure the size of the engine remains compact.

But unlike VW's naturally aspirated V6 engines, this one will feature forced induction and sources say it will have a twin turbocharged setup.

The VW Design Vision GTI study will have that under the hood. The concept features a twin turbocharged 3.0 liter V6 with a narrow angle design producing 496hp and 560Nm of torque between 4,000 to 6,000 rpm.

The new twin-turbocharged VR6 engine will be used on future VW models including the next-generation Passat, CC, Scirocco and the production version of the CrossBlue concept.
