New York city is preparing to replace its street lamps with LEDs. That's right, all 250,000! The project was announced by Mayor Bloomberg, and he pointed out that the shift to LED would save the city $6 million in energy costs and $8 million in maintenance every year. That's incredible!

"Using LEDs for street lighting is more than just a bright idea, it’s a necessity for sustainable cities to operate more efficiently while also delivering clearer, better quality light for New Yorkers." The transition should be complete by 2017.

Should other cities everywhere else follow suit? After all, it does sound like there's a lot of money to be saved.
