England May Be Getting Driverless Cars as Early as 2015 [VIDEO]
2013.11.05
Since 2011, driverless pods have been shuttling travelers from terminal to terminal at London's Heathrow Airport. Now, these driverless cars may be breaking free from the airport into the city's streets.
A new fleet of pod cars are being rolled out in the city of Milton Keynes, north of London. The first few units are expected to be deployed as early as 2015, and by 2017, Milton Keynes is expected to have 100 of the futuristic driverless vehicles.
Travelers wanting a lift will have to pay a fare of £2. The driverless cars will run on electricity and return later to their charging stations between fares.
The project is part of a pilot program, which will require special lanes for the pods and building their charging stations around the city. The project is estimated to cost somewhere around $105 million.
