Maybank is launching a community-driven movement called Project H.E.A.R.T to bring light to communities across Asia that need it.

Project H.E.A.R.T, which stands for Helping Every Asian Rise Together, will provide needy communities across Asia with solar-powered light bulbs —a free, sustainable light source—that will improve their daily lives significantly.

The project is a key community initiative that forms part of Maybank Group’s larger mission to “humanise financial services across Asia”.

Kampung Chuweh, an Orang Asli settlement by the shores of Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, will be the first community to receive solar-powered light bulbs under Project H.E.A.R.T.

Atti, a resident of Kampung Chuweh said of the project, “Having more light at night will certainly help our community to be more productive. We can get more things done at night like sewing, mending nets, and our children can practise their reading. It will be cheaper too, as the kerosene we use to light our lamps is very expensive. These solar-powered light bulbs will definitely make a difference to my family.”

And she isn't the only one. Across the world, 1 in 4 people live without electricity and access to a cheap and clean light source, limiting their productivity and exposing them to health and safety risks. A significant proportion of these people live within the ASEAN region.

“It is fitting that we are launching Project H.E.A.R.T. in conjunction with Deepavali, the Festival of Lights”, said Mohamed Adam Wee, Maybank’s Group Chief Marketing Officer and Project Lead for Project H.E.A.R.T.

“We are literally bringing light into the lives of Kampung Chuweh’s residents, and in so doing our hope is that the impact from this simple initiative will create a brighter future for the entire community,” he added.

Through project H.E.A.R.T., households in targeted communities would be able to save as much as 20-30
per cent of their income, live more healthy, safe and productive lives. Plans are underway to distribute solar-powered light bulbs to other communities in Malaysia and the Philippines for Christmas.

“We cannot underestimate the impact that these solar lights have on these communities. We believe that by making it easy for our customers and the public to participate, the caring Malaysian spirit will be ignited and more people will join the movement, thus increasing the number of communities in need that we are able to empower through these solar-lights. In this way, Maybank is uniquely placed to engage with our 22 million customers to take this even further. By starting this movement and making it easier for our customers and the public to participate in Project H.E.A.R.T., just imagine how many lives and communities we will be able to brighten”, Adam added.
