China's role in the global auto industry is about to get much bigger. The Asian country is already the world’s greatest car market and the No. 1 country for the production of automobiles, having manufactured more than 22 million units last year, out of a global production of more than 87 million units.

According to forecast from IHS Automotive, China will make up half of the world's annual vehicle production by 2021.
