According to a rumor being whispered around and heard by the Wall Street Journal, Apple wants to expand its mobile payment capabilities beyond iTunes purchases. They are moving into a space dominated by people like PayPal, Google, Square.

There are over 575 million registered iTunes users. So it's no surprise if they go the way of mobile payments. In fact, it would be surprising if they didn't even think about it. They first dabbled in making a payment feature for Passbook, but never saw it through. And you can pay through iTunes in Apple retail stores now too.

Apple didn't officially comment to WSJ about the rumor, but the usual "people with the knowledge" suggest that the mobile payment segment is heating up for sure. Your smartphone is going to be your wallet eventually.
