Still not convinced Google is Skynet in the making? They are buying London-based artificial intelligence company DeepMind for a cool $500 million.

The report states that the search giant will buy DeepMind for "more than $500 million," having beaten Facebook in negotiations with the startup at the end of last year. The acquisition was led by Larry Page, and it will add to the AI team at Google.

DeepMind was founded by neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, Skype developer Jaan Tallin, and researcher Shane Legg. They have 75 employees, and it is vague about what they do exactly beyond using "the best techniques from machine learning and systems neuroscience to build powerful general purpose learning algorithms".

Now, obviously, people are worried about all the tech Google is having under its umbrella. The company announced it was establishing an ethics board to ensure the potentially controversial AI technology can't be abused. For now, Skynet is keeping Skynet in check. For now. [The Information, Re/code]
