Apple has acquired 3D-sensing technology company PrimeSense. They were also the ones who made the original Microsoft Kinect sensor. Will there be an Xbox competitor? Or will Apple just retrofit the Apple TV with some really impressive motion tech?

The acquisition suggests that Apple is getting serous about 3D. They have been filing patents for 3D related technology for years. For example, remember their hands-free 3D display from 2009? Or projected 3D display? There are tons more we're guessing.

Earlier this year, a 3D scanning company used PrimeSense sensors to build a next-gen 3D scanner for consumers that enabled you to scan real world objects and then 3D print copies of them in a few minutes. Imagine if that sort of functionality existed in Apple products.

For now, there's a lot of speculation as to what Apple would do with PrimeSense. One thing is for sure: they aren't shelving this one. [IDG]
