Many homeowners choose the wall colors of their homes based on their likes and dislikes, which isn’t wrong; but the colors they choose subconsciously influence their everyday lives, from work to play.

Therefore, the psychological effects of color in interior design should be taken into consideration when choosing the color palette of your homes.

It may seem unusual, but the color in your house has an impact on your mood, state of mind, and overall temperament. Color psychology is described on Wikipedia as; ‘’the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior.’’ So, in this article, we’ll dig a little deeper and understand the psychological effects of color on humans and its importance in interior design.

Warm Colors

1. Red

Red is the warmest vibrant and intense color. It emotes feelings of love, desire, anger, strength, and danger. Although it’s great for drawing attention, too much red causes irritation.

Thus, it wouldn’t be wise to incorporate red colors in your bedrooms or areas of relaxation. You can include red in your kitchen and dining area or as an accent wall in the living room.

2. Orange

This bright, invigorating, and stimulating color of fire and sunshine is used to heal lungs and boost energy levels in color therapy. Orange is often associated with sunshine, which invokes feelings of warmth and coziness making it suitable for any area of the house.

An orange accent wall, furniture, accessories, or curtains makes your home bright and cheerful.

3. Yellow

Another bright, energetic and attention-grabbing color is yellow. However, too much yellow causes visual fatigue, and so it's suggested to use it in small proportions.

Yellow is the perfect color for accentuating interiors. An accent wall or a sofa among colors complementary to yellow instantly brightens up the ambiance, making it comfortable and welcoming.

Cool Colors

1. Blue

Blue colors have a soothing effect on us and invoke a sense of serenity while it’s also associated with feelings of melancholy. Not only does it impart feelings of calmness and relaxation, but research has shown that people are more productive in blue rooms because it’s a mentally stimulating color.

Blue is a great choice to incorporate an eye-catching tranquillity in any area of the house from bathrooms to master bedrooms.

2. Purple

A blend of warm red and cool blue, purple is regarded as the most complex yet sophisticated color. Purple exudes luxury, drama, and has feminine energy while emoting feelings of creativity and calmness.

For a lush and serene interior, purple is best used in a monochromatic color scheme. Use darker shades of purple for curtains, accent pieces or wall, and the lighter shades on the floor and walls.

3. Green

Often associated with the color of nature, green symbolizes good luck, safety, and health while exuding a sense of restfulness, freshness, and calmness.

It’s often used in interior design to bring balance and harmony and goes perfectly well in any room. The best way to include green in your homes is to use it with complementary colors or other shades of green.

Neutral Colors

1. Black

Few people use black for the entire space because it absorbs light, making your interiors dull. Black is a dramatic color inducing mystery, power, and is often associated with mourning and death, so I wouldn’t recommend going overboard with it.

It’s best for accentuating and it complements almost every color to create a striking look.

2. White

White symbolizes purity, spirituality, and tranquillity, and no house is complete with the presence of white in it.

If you’re short on space and light, then white is the best choice to create an illusion of airy, spacious, and bright space.

3. Grey

A combination of two neutrals; white and black, grey symbolizes balance, stability, and sophistication.

Grey is regarded as an interior designer’s favorite color because of its versatility and is perfect to create a classy yet chic look.

There you have it, a brief explanation of the psychological effects of warm, cool, and neutral colors on our mind and interiors.
