Determine the Size of Your Furnace Filter and Purchase the Right One
The first thing to do is to determine the size and type of filter your furnace needs. Most times, you will find the specifications of the furnace in your users’ manual. If this is not the case, you may need to check the existing filter to see the dimensions.

The size of a filter is normally printed on the cardboard frame, so you may have to partially remove the existing filter to check. In the rare instance that you can’t determine the size by these methods, use a measuring tape to measure for height, width, and depth. In any case, make sure you buy a suitable filter for your furnace.

Turn Off Your Furnace and Unplug From Power Supply
Furnace filter replacement is a major maintenance routine, and you have to turn the system off to complete it. To ensure maximum safety, unplug the furnace from the power source.

Locate Your Furnace Filter
If this is your first time changing a furnace filter, you may have to find where it is located. The best way to start is to consult the manual that came with your heating and cooling system. Most furnaces have their filters in their blower compartments. You will find it by lifting up and removing the furnace cover. The filter may also be built into the metal ductwork before the blower fan.

Remove the Existing Filter and Insert the New One
When you locate the old filter, take note of the arrow on the frame before removing it. This shows the correct airflow, and you have to insert the new filter the same way to ensure that it works. Dispose of the old filter immediately and insert the new one.

Turn Your Furnace Back On
When you have inserted the new filter correctly, the next thing to do is to connect your furnace again and switch it back on. Remember to set the thermostat before running your heating system.
