A toddler died from suffocation after being trapped in a sofa bed in a Harlem apartment on Sunday.

Aissante Diallo, 3, was at home when “the bed retracted, trapping her and her 10-year old sister.” While the sister managed to escape, Aissante was “squeezed inside.” NBC 4 reports that the girls were sleeping at the time of the accident.

There were two other children in the apartment, but they weren't in the sofa bed. All of the kids were being watched by their mother's boyfriend.

It's unclear if he was inside the home when the accident happened. “His story has been inconsistent,” according to police. He did, however, flag down an officer on the sidewalk to alert the cops about Aissante's injuries.

Investigators are still questioning the boyfriend while waiting for the medical examiner determine the cause of the death.
