New studies on social media have indicated that Facebook makes people feel terrible about themselves, while too much Twitter can lead to breakups.

The first study from the University of Missouri School of Journalism surveyed 581 Twitter users, and found that those who used Twitter regularly also tended to have Twitter related problems in their relationships.

The second study from Austria's University of Innsbruck determined that people who can't get enough of Facebook tend to were more likely to report that feeling bad about themselves. PC mag reports:
"Our findings suggest that—on a daily basis—hundreds of millions of people engage in an activity that they consider (not very) meaningful," they write In the journal Computers in Human Behavior, "which in turn dampens their mood."
So is this a sign to consider quitting social media all together? Not quite. Perhaps people retreat to Twitter because they're already dissatisfied about relationships and are looking for comfort elsewhere. And you can't really blame Facebook for bumming you out, especially since those on your friends list are probably only using it to make others think that their lives are so amazing and awesome.  But it probably wouldn't hurt to log out and step away from your laptop every once in awhile.
