Apps keep getting better and better. This year we saw plenty of new and instantly popular apps make their way to the top of the iTunes App Store. Mashable tested them and came up with a list of 10 best iPhone apps. Check it out to see if you've missed out on any:

1. Afterlight
This app allows users to do basic things like crop and rotate photos, but it also has an expansive collection of filters, borders and textures to turn your iPhone photo into an iPhone masterpiece. Of course, the app also allows users to share the edited photos to their social media accounts.

Price: $0.99


2. Duolingo
Apple chose Duolingo as its top iPhone app of the year. Duolingo helps users learn a new language from their iPhones with both visual and verbal lessons. Learners are rewarded with experience points, which they can use to buy perks within the app. The app currently offers five languages, including Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian.

3. Pocket Light Meter
If you love photography, the Photo Light Meter will brighten up your day. The app provides a functioning, quality light meter that tests the intensity and exposure of the photography subject. Light meters cost anywhere from $15 to $200 at the store and online, but this app is free, and you won't need to carry an extra gadget with you all the time.

4. Temple Run 2
It turns out Temple Run 2 is a wonderful sequel to its predecessor, Temple Run. For starts, the new game has better graphics, and there are more characters to choose from and new terrains to conquer. It's also the third most downloaded iPhone app of 2013, behind Candy Crush Saga and YouTube.

5. Venmo
Nobody likes debt, so here's where Venmo comes in. The app allows people to pay each other via iPhone at the touch of a button. By simply connecting your checking account to your Venmo app, you can settle debts no matter how small they are, without paying any processing fee to send payments or cash out back to your bank account. Users can also use the app to "charge" others.

6. Over
This app allows you to overlay text onto images you take with your smartphone. The messages can turn smartphone images into e-cards, or simply provide a fun way to spruce up your photos before sharing them to local sites like Instagram or Twitter.

7. ThirdLove
You run a risk of not fitting into clothes you buy online, and ThirdLove aims to solve that. The app allows women to send in iPhone photos that can be analyzed to determine the correct bra size (the company also designs lingerie).

Price: Free; prices vary for the actual lingerie


8. Vine
This year has been Vine-filled, and it's the fourth most-downloaded iPhone app of the year.

9. Proust
The idea behind Proust is to allow users to create their own Marry, Date or Dump scenarios with any items they choose. You can write your own choices, or the app will generate random ones for you. You can send your list to friends to see which topics they deem most important. It's a simple game which you can learn a lot about your friends from.

10. Mextures
This is another photo editing app for the iPhone. Users can save setting packages for use on other photos in the future, and the app has more than 70 pre-loaded textures. Users can layer, blend, or simply adjust lighting levels.
