Volvo May Phase Out Pedestrian Airbags and Use Active Electronics Instead

Volvo have proposed its pedestrian friendly airbags before, because shame on you if you can't avoid a car. But the whole development may be short lived as electronics and crash avoiding sensors become better and more widespread.
Senior vice president Lex Kerssmakers says “I am not even sure if we will continue with the bonnet (airbags) because it's not necessary, SUV is a pretty high car… It's also there for the pedestrians and they need to land soft but if the car is high, they land soft anyhow. So no, at the moment no.”
Kerssmakers refers to the 2015 XC90. The new model will be fitted with an array of sensors deemed enough to make the pop-up bonnet airbag irrelevant.
