Google and Audi Are Working on Android In-Car Entertainment and Infotainment Systems
2013.12.31
Google will get in bed with just about anybody. The last time we heard they had something going on for some cool car tech was when they paired Google Glass with Mercedes-Benz. Now, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has been working with Audi to develop an in-car entertainment and infotainment systems based on Android.
The two will announce their plan at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. According to the WSJ, the announcement will detail the collaborative efforts with other manufacturers too, namely Nvidia, in order to "establish Android as an important technology for future vehicles". The new tech will allow drivers and passengers to access music, navigation, apps, and services similar to those you can on an Android smartphone.
Sounds pretty cool actually. Apple itself isn't far behind. They've announced their plans to integrate iOS into the car dash and has support from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, GM and Honda. It looks like the platform wars are going to disparate after all. Tech companies are taking their war to another frontier - our cars. [WSJ]
