This Table is Sexier Because it is made from 50,000 Year Old Trees
2014.04.03
Want to own something really really old? How about this 50,000 year old table? It was made from ancient Kauri trees that were rediscovered, hidden and buried under peat and mud in New Zealand. Now they're tables.
Of course, the discovery of the trees is more important than the table itself. It helps climate scientists study how the Earth has changed over the millennia. It's also being used to build furniture and other things, like this $700,000 canopy of the Aukland Art Gallery:
Swamp Kauri wood is now all the rage in New Zealand—and in Europe, China, and the US. Holzano, a Polish design studio that makes tabletops with this ancient wood will sell you furniture that cost a small fortune. It makes sense, after all, it is one of the world's oldest wood.
