The World's Thinnest Glass Was Created By Accident
2013.09.13
The thinnest sheet of glass in the world measures at two atoms in thickness. Talk about scary thin!
The sheet of glass was created by scientists from Cornell University and it is the result of an accident. They were attempting to produce pure graphene when the researchers noticed that "muck" was forming.
Upon further analysis, a thin layer made of silicon and oxygen measuring two atoms thick have been confirmed by the Guinness World of Records as the thinnest glass ever created. All this from an accident!
The new form of glass is allowing the scientists to understand the structure of glass more accurately and they think the super-thin material could be used in future transistors. Not bad for an accident! [Cornell via Verge]
