Your Spaceship Needs To Travel 537 Kilometers PER SECOND Just To Get Out Of The Milky Way
2013.09.25
Is the Milky Way too boring for you already? Want to jet out of here? Sure! You'll just need to be traveling at 1.2 million mph / 1.9 million km/h to get out of the Milky Way.
Researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, Germany came up with that number after crunching the data from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey to work out just how much exit velocity is required to leave our galaxy.
They analyzed the motion of 90 high velocity stars and used a series of complex theoretical models of the galaxy's mass and were able to calculate the speed at which objects can exit the Milky Way.
So if the Enterprise is going to be made, it would need to hit 537 kilometers per second - or 0.2 percent of the speed of light to escape the gravitational pull. Will we ever be able to get to that kind of speed? Here's what the scientists have to say:
"I know it's a crazy idea, but if you had lots of matter and lots of antimatter, you could power a spaceship out of the galaxy."
Maybe one day. [arXiv via New Scientist Image by GSFC]More Articles
