This may just be the first phone to have more pixels than a tablet. This Quad HD smartphone comes with 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and it was just announced by China's Vivo.

The Vivo Xplay 3S comes with a 2K HD screen. Packing in more pixels than an iPad, the company didn't specify how big the display would be, but Engadget suspects Vivo is using a 5.5-inch Quad HD panel made by LG. That would translate to 538 pixels per inch (ppi).

Under the hood there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and LTE powers. Price and launch date remain unknown.

But why would anyone need so many pixels? Can the human eye even discern those individual pixels at normal viewing distances?

And will this start a 2K HD screen trend among other manufacturers? Will Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC respond with Quad HD phones of their own?
