Scientists over at Shanghai's Fudan University have come up with one bright idea. They created a lightbulb that produces its own Wi-Fi signal. The technology is called Li-Fi, and it actually works better than the average connection in China.

Four computers placed near a Li-Fi bulb can connect to the Internet using light frequencies instead of radio waves. The bulb has a microchip embedded that produces a signal, yielding rates as fast as 150 mbps.

Its not only quite good, but also affordable. Researchers are showing off 10 sample kits at a trade show next month in China, and Li-Fi could end up being a very practical and commercially viable asset. .

For now, Li-Fi has a few technical details left to iron out, mostly dealing with its microchip design and manufacturing. [Xinhua via ZDNET]
