Neil Armstrong's Spacesuit Was Made By a Bra Company
2013.11.14
The A7L spacesuit was the one worn to the moon. Worn by Neil Armstrong, it was a supremely high tech garment that used a unique Teflon coated, glass microfiber fabric dubbed "Beta cloth". The suit can withstand 1,000 degree conditions and there are twenty one layers of synthetic fabric so an astronaut can survive the airless lunar/solar environs and radically shifting temperatures.
The suit was made by the rubber garment engineers at the bra division of the International Latex Corporation. The engineers were able to fashion a movable joint called a "convulute" out of nylon tricot-reinforced neoprene allowing an astronaut to bend, flex and move around without wasting too much energy.
Interesting isn't it?
