Rolls-Royce Will 3D Print Its Airplane Engines
2013.11.15
Rolls Royce has decided to use 3D printing to help make its airplane engines. They are confident they can push the limits of additive manufacturing to provide the levels of precision required for aeronautical engineering.
The automaker will be using 3D printers to create metallic and ceramic parts for its commercial airplane engines. According to Dr. Wapenhans -head of technology:
“3D printing opens up new possibilities, new design space. Through the 3D printing process, you’re not constrained by having to get a tool to create a shape. You can create any shape you like.”
Next up? 3D printing the entire car? Quite possible. [FT via Pocket-Lint Image by Rolls-Royce]
