Apple's iBeacon Location-Aware Shopping Starts in Stores Today
2013.12.07
Apple will switch on its new iBeacons service and provide location-aware services to your phone across 254 of its stores today.
The feature uses low power Bluetooth transmitters found around the stores. Varying signal strength will allow Apple to know where you are standing.
And as long as you give it permission to track you, iBeacons will offer an augmented retail experience. The data it offers should be tailored to your needs, based on your location.
For example, it might ask if you want to upgrade your phone as you drift past the iPhone section, or trade your current handset in it could display an order number as you walk into the store, ready for pickup.
It remains to be seen if this will work well. [AP via Verge]
