20 Impractical Things to Bring Along When You Travel
2014.06.12
When you travel, you don't want to bring your entire home with you. You only need your basic necessities, and most of the time, you come home not having used half of the things you packed. If you're traveling to a desolate location or somewhere where amenities are hard to find, then by all means, pack away.
But if you're traveling to another city, or a beach resort, here are 20 totally impractical things to bring along in this day and age:
1. Your current toothbrush
Most hotels now provide disposable toothbrushes, so if you're not fussy about the type of toothbrush you use, you can leave yours at home.
2. Shampoo and soap
Most hotels provide these. But we understand that some people use specific types of shampoo, so this is only unnecessary if you don't care about your bath products.
3. Towels
Towels take up so much luggage space. Plus, all hotels supply towels now.
4. Too many shoes
Instead of lugging along 6 different shoe options, think carefully how the shoe will look with your outfits. Bring as few as possible: One for walking, one for dinner, and another casual pair.
5. Too many maps
You'll end up using only one. Instead, download and save them on your phone, or study them before embarking on your trip.
6. Your favorite pillow
It's time to grow up. You don't need this anymore.
7. Too many watches
Seriously, just one will do.
8. Too many jeans
Your jeans will last the entire trip. Perhaps just two pairs will do.
9. Instant cup noodles
Unless you're on a budget, leave these at home. You're traveling for a reason, go and taste the local food!
10. Your favorite blanket
Totally pointless, and you need to grow up. Like #6, you don't need this anymore.
11. Too many outfits
Plan ahead. Pick and choose what you're going to wear every day while on vacation, before you go on vacation. Limit yourself to, say, two outfits per day. If you can't decide what to wear then you'd better be okay with the weight you're adding on to your luggage.
12. Too many gadgets
You're going on a holiday! Instead of surrounding yourself with gadgets, bring only what you need; your iPod and your mobile phone. The rest can wait for you at home.
13. A photo frame of your family
WTF. Never bring this along. Just save it onto your mobile phone.
14. Money belt / pouch - because you immediately get marked as a tourist
These days, the biggest giveaways for tourists are pouches or money belts. You think it's safe but it really draws more attention. It helps if you act and look like a local.
15. Sleeping bags
Unless you're camping, you really don't need this. Those "emergency" moments rarely ever happen.
16. Travel cutlery
You're going to be eating out, so you don't need these. If you do, call room service and have them send you some cutlery.
17. Torch lights
How often do you even use these? Especially when you travel.
18. Expensive camera gear
When you're traveling, you'll want to travel light. You only need one good camera, because you're not there for a photography competition. Besides, you don't want to risk losing expensive camera gear.
19. Instant coffee packs
Those coffee and tea sachets you see in your hotel room are always free - unless you're staying in Tune Hotel, then you'll have to bring your own instant coffee.
20. Your most expensive clothes
Unless you have somewhere to go and show it off, you don't have to turn your trip into a branding spree.
