In some disconcerting news, pet owners in South Korea are reportedly giving their pets cosmetic procedures too. The Washington Post says that 20% of women in South Korea have opted for some form of cosmetic work and that trend has now moved on to dogs and various other pets.

While plastic surgery on a pet is not unheard of, it might actually be needed in some breeds to reduce bacterial build-up and infection in skin folds and more. Sometimes, it's a medical necessity.

The trend in South Korea though, seems to be mostly cosmetically driven. According to an unnamed veterinarian telling Chosun Ilbo:

Plastic surgery for pets in the past were for medical reasons but the result also brought better looking dogs, so there is a growing customer base getting a plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons on their dogs.

Another vet named Dr. Toon also told Chosun Ilbo that cosmetic surgery for dogs are "medically safe." They include tail shortening, ear trimming, wrinkle straightening, fat and stretch mark removal, double eyelid surgery, and even botox.

Do pets really need surgeries like these? Most South Koreans actually disapprove of this trend, with 63% saying cosmetic surgery for pets should be banned. So who are the folks that are doing it?
