Discover the Netherlands by car
2021.03.03
We know, we know … it isn’t the ideal moment to travel. But hey, it doesn’t hurt to dream, right? A fun trip for when this all is over, is going on holiday in the Netherlands. After all, the Netherlands is so much more than just Amsterdam. In this article, we tell you more about what this great country has to offer!
Fly in to Amsterdam
When you fly into the Netherlands, you arrive at Schiphol Airport. You can easily take the train into the city center of Amsterdam for the first leg of your trip. After all, you have to visit Amsterdam at least once! Enjoy a canal cruise, eat bitterballen and get lost in de Jordaan - just like the locals! Amsterdam is an incredible city full of culture and life. You can party from dusk ‘till dawn or spend all day in one of the city’s many museums… the choice is yours!
Once you’ve visited the city, it’s time to pick up your car. We recommend Diks, a car rental company that has pick-up spots in Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Almere (Dutch:auto huren Almere). What’s super handy about this company, is that they let you rent a car without a credit card! (Dutch: auto huren zonder creditcard)
Visit Zaanse Schans
There are few sights that scream “this is the Netherlands!” more than the Zaanse Schans. Water and windmills… the ideal spot for a photo opportunity! In this area you can cross off some more ‘typical Dutch to do’s’, such as pose in old, traditional Dutch clothing, eat stroopwafels or even go on a cheese tasting.
See modern architecture in Rotterdam
Rotterdam was bombed in 1940, which destroyed a lot of the original houses. For that reason, the city center isn’t as protected as e.g. the center of Amsterdam, which has allowed Rotterdam to build new buildings all over town. Nowadays, the city is well known for its modernist architecture. Some must sees in Rotterdam are the Markthal, the Erasmusbridge, the building ‘De Rotterdam’ and the cube houses.
Into the wild in De Hoge Veluwe
If you want some peace and quiet after visiting all those cities, we recommend the national park De Hoge Veluwe. It’s huge: about 55 km2 and consists of heathlands, sand dunes and woodlands. The ideal place for a few hours of walking and enjoying nature, if you ask us!
We hope you enjoy your roundtrip in the Netherlands!
