Calling all technology addicts, as you're about to get seriously tested on your ability to resist checking your smartphone.

UNICEF's new Tap Project campaign is based around our mobile addiction. For every minute a person puts down their phone, the children's charity will send the equivalent number of "fresh water days" to someone who really needs them. The money collected will go towards building and maintaining water wells, putting in water pipes to rivers, and buying purification technology.

The app works with the internal functions to calculate how long you go without moving the device and runs for a maximum of 24 hours. If you think you're up for the challenge, head to uniceftapproject.org using your phone's browser and follow the instructions from there.

And the response so far has been impressive. Within just four days, phone-users have already given up 7 million minutes. Here's hoping this campaign makes a difference, if only to get you to stop checking your phone every few minutes.
