Which balcony floor is the most suitable?
2023.03.06
The balcony floor has a decisive influence on the appearance and usability of the outdoor area. Whether stone, tile or wood is chosen as the flooring is primarily a matter of personal taste. However, each material brings with it equally practical advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered.
Natural stone and tiles for the balcony
Natural stones and fine stone tiles such as Novoceram give the balcony floor a natural, neat and modern look. They are easy to clean, durable and particularly easy to combine. This makes them a great choice for decking. In addition, they can be found in numerous designs, so that the color and grain can be selected to suit your own taste. From modern and puristic to an inviting Mediterranean flair, there are numerous options here.
However, tiles and stones also have disadvantages. These include the high weight. For this reason alone, they are not suitable for every balcony. In addition, they can heat up strongly in the sun and store this heat for a long time. On the south side in midsummer, this makes it impossible to walk on the balcony barefoot.
When laying a raised floor is recommended. In this case, the tiles lie on stilts. If, on the other hand, they are laid with mortar, there is a high risk of frost damage and cracks.
Natural stone carpet as a balcony floor
Natural stone carpet consists of gravel and a special adhesive. The mass is spread directly on the floor and hardens. As a result, there are no joints. Water can still run off without any problems. The flooring is durable, hard-wearing and creates a comfortable walking sensation. In addition, it can be designed to be visually versatile.
On the downside, however, are the high costs and the time-consuming installation, which should be carried out by experienced professionals. If the covering has to be removed, this is also associated with a lot of effort. Novoceram tiles on stilts can be easily applied and removed by yourself. This does not apply to the natural stone carpet.
Wood, bamboo and WPC as flooring for the balcony
Wood offers the greatest variety in terms of design and installation. It creates a natural look and does not heat up too much even in the sun. With proper selection and care, it proves to be durable and long-lasting. The planks can be easily cut to fit, so no compromises are necessary in this regard. WPC and bamboo are practical alternatives.
There is also the possibility of choosing wooden tiles with a click system instead of wooden planks. These allow completely new designs, as patterns can be laid. They are comparatively inexpensive and particularly easy and quick to lay or remove. They have a low weight and do not create residues.
These numerous advantages are countered by disadvantageous properties. These include the need for maintenance. Without it, the wood can turn gray or fade. In addition, cracks can form and it can splinter. The natural material works, which can cause swelling in high humidity, and also warping or other deformation is possible. To avoid these phenomena, continuous effort must be made. However, WPC as a mixture between wood and plastic can also prevent such problems and does not require extensive maintenance.
Even without artificial turf and straw or outdoor carpet, the selection of floor coverings for the balcony is large. Before a decision is made, the respective advantages and disadvantages should therefore be compared precisely for the conditions on site. Only in this way will it be possible to make the optimal choice and be satisfied with the covering in the long term.
