New data shows the European Union pig herd is declining at a significant
rate, and this is a trend that is being mirrored around the world. Pig
farmers have been plunged into loss by high pig-feed costs, caused by
the global failure of maize and soya harvests. All main European
pig-producing countries report shrinking sow herds.
One reason might be due to recent drought in the US which seriously affected this year's maize harvest. Not only has it dramatically increased the wholesale price of cereal (pig grub), this contributes towards the escalating prices of the bacon-producing meat, which could result in a shortage of the cheap cuts. Now might be a good time to head to your nearest butcher to stock up.
