Man Turns Himself Over To Police For Child Porn Because His Computer Told Him To
On July 23rd, Jay Matthew Riley walked into a police station claiming he had received an electronic notice telling him to pay a fine or risk criminal investigation by the FBI.
The 21-year-old was even kind enough to bring his computer with him to the police station so officers could search it for illegal content. Investigators ultimately uncovered several photos of underage girls, and at least one correspondence with a 13-year-old from Minnesota. By end day, Riley was being charged with three counts of child porn possession, and one count each of using a communication device to solicit certain offenses involving children and indecent liberties with a minor.
Not surprisingly, the message on Riley's computer was in fact generated by a virus from a year-old scam known as Ransomware. Riley is currently being held without bond; his court date has yet to be released.
